2/15 - New Demo Available

This is a game project that I started about a year ago, put aside, and recently picked up again. So far the player engine is pretty much done, and that's about all this demo includes. Hopefully I'll have more things added soon enough.

Basic Controls:

Left/Right arrows - run
Up arrow - jump/climb ladders
'X' key - pick up/throw snowballs
Down arrow - press while holding a snowball to climb on top

Other:

1,2,3 - hold to create earthquakes
9 - press to switch between normal snow and blizzards
(these two are not fully implemented yet; just here for fun)

F2 - restart

Of course there's no real use to throwing snowballs currently... but it is fun. You can also press the down arrow key while holding a snowball to climb on top and roll around with it. This allows you to move faster than normally, and you can always jump off, even in midair. You might be able to use this to cross large gaps... Additionally, throwing snowballs at frigid water will cause them to freeze, making temporary platforms to help you cross safely. Note that you can continue to pick up snowballs while standing on these platforms, allowing you to make it over even the largest lakes.

Use the up and down arrow keys to climb ladders. Press left or right to jump off at any time.

Also, those circle things are supposed to be poles, I just haven't figured out a good way to represent them in the current perspective. In any case, just jump into them and press any of the four arrow keys to jump off in that direction.

I guess that's about all I need to say about the game right now and if I missed anything, you'll figure it out as you play. Oh, I should mention that I've hidden my initials somewhere in this level (two places now actually). Congrats to anyone who can find them.

*note that the new background is temporary and is still being worked on.

Project Comments

Ok guys, new demo is up and there's a lot of new things to try out. Let me know what you think =)

Oh and just so you know, I fixed the stuck-in-wall glitch.

Zi Said 2 months ago

Maybe he is sliding into the wall with his momentum?

Also, I found the flipping of the view when you change directions to be unpleasant. A smooth slide into place would be better.

the_muffin_man Said 2 months ago

That was my original guess, but I did try changing it and I still had the problem. It's strange, I get this glitch with a lot of my platformers... Guess I need to rethink that part of my engines, haha.

The Berryster Said 2 months ago

Is it maybe a problem with the collision mask? Because, if it's even off by a little bit, than there's your problem.

the_muffin_man Said 2 months ago

Yea I know about the wall glitch and it's been bothering me for a long time but I haven't found a solution yet. =/

But anyway, thanks for the comment. Glad you liked the game so far. =)

I love it. Very smooth game play. Very smooth graphics.

However, I managed to get stuck in the wall a few times by running right and then turning left just before I hit it.

Definitely going to keep an eye on this. Keep up the good work!

Oh yea, the gradient background is just a filler, eventually I'll stop being lazy and actually draw a background with trees, etc.

Glad you enjoyed it. =)

Cute. (in a good way!)

I like those little things he swings around to get to higher places.  Also the fact that he moves more slowly when he has a snowball in tow adds a sense of realism.

Graphics look pretty good, if I had to complain it would be that the background is primarily a gradient, and that particular gradient doesn't seem to match too well with the snow tiles.

the_muffin_man Said 3 months ago

Yea, I know the perspective is kind of strange between the snow and rock. Still working with it.

With the snowball exploding thing, I actually did something exactly like that originally and it looked very strange. I thought about it and realized that when you throw a snowball against the ground it doesn't really throw chunks of snow everywhere, especially if it's thrown against more snow. What I have now looks better in my opinion but it's definitely not perfect yet.

The Berryster Said 3 months ago

I tried it, and it's pretty nice.

One thing that bugged me, though, was that on the top of the dirt, it's jut cut off, and the rocks on the top end up looking very flat. I would suggest adding some lighter colours to the top, give it some shading, I think it'll really make it look nicer.

Also, on the play, on the far side of his hood - if I were you, I'd make it one pixel thinner. Right now it feels as though the hood is rather lopsided, which looks kinda weird.

Other than that, some music/sound effects would be nice, and it all felt very smooth.

Good job! I think this'll turn out to be a very fun game.

Oh! One more thing: When you throw a snowball, and it hits the ground, it looks like it melts... I think if you maybe had a bunch of particles blast out in a pseudo-explosion, it'd look very nice.

Cheers!

Thanks, glad you liked it. As for the error, I don't know why that happened but I'll check it out.

Drazzke Said 3 months ago

Pretty fun so far! I really liked the graphics and everything seemed pretty smooth, engine wise.

I did encounter an error, however.

I was running with a snow ball, and just as I ran onto a patch of dirt, I threw the snow ball, and it gave me an error saying:

ERROR in
action number 1
of  Step Event
for object o_snowfloat:

Error in code at line 9:
   y=www.y+3;

at position 8: Unknown variable y

I had to abort (ignoring didn't work)

Anyways, great start. I'm looking forward to more

the_muffin_man Said 3 months ago

Yea, I didn't realize the demo didn't upload the first time, haha. And hmm not a bad idea for the snow... I'll look into it. =)

The Berryster Said 3 months ago

Looks pretty cool. One suggestion I have for the snow would be to have it kinda "droop" at the bottom, it looks really weird how it's just flat across. Or, if you don't want to do that, making it go all the way to the ground would look nice as well.

Also, why have the controls up if you don't have a demo...?
